SPECIAL INVESTIGATION AND RECOVERY UNIT
It is estimated that insurance fraud costs the United States $80 billion or more a year. Insurance fraud significantly contributes to increased insurance costs. Insurance companies that pay out fraudulent insurance claims must have higher rates to cover those costs.
To reduce fraudulent claims against Florida Municipal Insurance Trust members, in 1999 the League created the Special Investigation Unit. Then, in 2022, we combined Special Investigation and Subrogation into one team renaming to Special Investigation and Recovery Unit.
Using the latest technology and member input to investigate suspicious claims, the Special Investigation and Recovery Unit’s efforts have resulted in criminal prosecutions, reduced settlement amounts and modified physician and judge’s orders.
To date, the unit's successes include:
- More than $8.3 million in fraud cost savings for FMIT members
- More than $2.2 million court-ordered restitution
- More than 70 arrests
- More than $1.1 million annually in subrogation
If you are aware of fraudulent activity involving a Florida League of Cities or FMIT claim, you may report that activity by calling the SIU hotline at 888.447.5877 or by clicking on Report Fraud. Please provide as much information as possible to allow a complete and thorough investigation.
