Safety Excellence Initiative

The Florida Municipal Insurance Trust’s Safety Excellence Initiative (SEI) is a voluntary safety accreditation program that recognizes and rewards FMIT members for their safety management processes. View Flyer

A well-implemented safety management system will reduce losses, injuries, and illnesses. This robust, step-by-step program provides members with the knowledge and tools to develop and implement an effective safety management system. The program runs annually from October 1 to September 30.

For members that do not have existing safety management systems, SEI provides a step-by-step accreditation action plan. This includes all the written resources needed to successfully develop and implement organizational-specific health and safety management systems that meet established standards.

For members that have existing safety management systems, SEI provides a benchmark for members to compare industry best practices. The self-evaluation and eventual Safety Improvement Assessment can pinpoint areas that require additional attention and allow for continual improvement.

An expansion of the Safety Grant Program, SEI also offers an opportunity to achieve funding for safety and health-related resources once accreditation has been achieved. Through this multi-level rewards program, participants earn awards and funding in Bronze, Silver, or Gold status.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE

Step 1 (required): Complete the SEI accreditation process

The first step of the Safety Excellence Initiative is accreditation. This process will be coordinated with your Risk and Safety Consultant. There are three accreditation paths: 1) city, 2) law enforcement, and 3) fire department. More than one department (city, police, and fire) is eligible to submit for the SEI award during the same policy year, up to $6,000 in total for all three entities, subject to the availability of funds.

FMIT offers a wealth of resources to assist you with the process every step of the way, including:

  • An online resource library featuring written programs, safe work practices, and specialized training programs. Access Library
  • Self-evaluation checklists for each accreditation path:

Once accredited, members will be eligible for benefits including:

  • SEI reimbursement (based on premium and the accreditation level achieved)
  • SEI Award in Bronze, Silver, or Gold
  • Peer recognition
  • Perpetual Tower Trophy as accreditation levels are met

Members may stop at accreditation only. If you would like to seek award funding, you must proceed with the additional steps below once the accreditation process is complete.

Step 2 (optional): Apply for the SEI Award program and funding

The SEI Award is available annually. Funding will be a one-time annual submission process for the full amount achieved. If documentation does not reach the amount of available funds achieved, the remainder of funds will be forfeited.

To earn SEI recognition and funding, complete these four steps:

1. Complete the SEI accreditation process. See process above.

2. Apply for funding. After completing the SEI accreditation process, the Risk and Safety Consultant will assist in applying for funds based on your accreditation level (Bronze, Silver, or Gold).

3. Determine a point of contact. All funds for the SEI Award (as with Safety Grants) will receive approved funds through one point of contact via ACH only. This point of contact will be determined by the city and represent all entities, including police and fire. Departments will not receive funds directly.

4. Receive funding. Once the fund application process is approved, an ACH payment will be sent to the city contact.

Similar to the safety grant program, qualifying members will receive reimbursement based on the level achieved and the assessment score earned* up to $6,000 per year per city, subject to the availability of funds. You will receive an increased reimbursement as you progress through the accreditation levels.

Bronze – 50% reimbursement│ Silver – 75% reimbursement │ Gold – 100% reimbursement

*The receipts cannot be the same as those submitted with a member’s general safety grant application, if applicable.

AWARD PRESENTATION

An award with continuous improvement levels will be presented after completing the Safety Excellence Initiative level. Each department will have a designated continuous improvement trophy. After achieving Gold, a three-year waiting period will follow before accreditation may occur. The funds are only available during the policy year as accreditation levels are achieved.

Yes. All purchases or invoices must be dated within the current fiscal year (October 1 - September 30). The receipts cannot be the same as those submitted with a member’s general safety grant application, if applicable.

When should I expect to receive SEI reimbursement funds?

Once the fund application process is approved, an ACH payment will be sent to the city contact. You will be advised by your Risk and Safety Consultant with an estimated transfer time.

In the final (4th) quarter, only FMIT members participating in the FMIT for the next policy year will be eligible to receive reimbursement funds.

What if I do not expend funds but successfully meet a level or levels in the SEI program?

After successfully completing a level, what are the next steps?

This process will be coordinated with your Risk and Safety Consultant.

Can I utilize both the Safety Grant and SEI programs in a policy year?

Yes; however, unique receipts are required if participating in both programs.

Can I participate in the SEI Award program every policy year?

After an entity reaches Gold/Level 3, there is a three-year waiting period before re-entering the SEI Award program.
