Safety Excellence Initiative

The Florida Municipal Insurance Trust’s Safety Excellence Initiative (SEI) Award is a voluntary safety accreditation program that recognizes and rewards FMIT members for their safety management processes. An expansion of the Safety Grant Program, SEI offers an opportunity to achieve funding for safety and health-related resources. Through this multi-level rewards program, participants earn awards and funding in Bronze, Silver or Gold status.

A well-implemented safety management system will lead to a reduction in losses, injuries and illnesses. This robust, step-by-step program provides members with the knowledge and tools to develop and implement an effective safety management system. The program runs annually from October 1 to September 30.

For members that do not have existing safety management systems, SEI provides a step-by-step accreditation action plan. This includes all the written resources needed to successfully develop and implement organizational-specific health and safety management systems that meet established standards.

For members that have existing safety management systems, SEI provides a benchmark for members to compare industry best practices. The self-evaluation and eventual Safety Improvement Assessment can be used to pinpoint areas that require additional attention and allow for continual improvement.

SEI is available annually during the end of the policy year, based on renewal. Funding will be a one-time annual submission process for the full amount achieved. If documentation does not reach the amount of available funds achieved, the remainder of funds will be forfeited.

To earn SEI Award recognition and funding, complete these 4 steps:

1. Complete the SEI accreditation process. This process will be coordinated with your Risk and Safety Consultant. There are three accreditation paths: 1) city, 2) law enforcement and 3) fire department. More than one department (police, fire and city) is eligible to submit for the SEI award during the same policy year up to $6,000 total for all three entities, subject to the availability of funds.

FMIT offers a wealth of resources to assist you with the process every step of the way, including:

2. Apply for Funding. After completing the SEI accreditation process, the Risk and Safety Consultant will assist in applying for funds online based on your accreditation level (Bronze, Silver or Gold) through your FMIT Member Dashboard at https://insurance.flcities.com/member-login.

3. Determine a point of contact. All funds for the SEI Award and the Safety Grant will receive approved funds through one point of contact via ACH only. This point of contact will be determined by the city and represent all of the entities, including police and fire. Departments will not receive funds directly.

4. Receive Funding. Once the fund application process is approved, an ACH payment will be sent to the city contact.

Similar to the safety grant program, qualifying members will receive a match to submitted receipts* up to $6,000 per year per city, subject to the availability of funds, based on their premium range and accreditation level achieved. As you progress through the accreditation levels, you will receive an increased match in funding

Bronze – 50% match │ Silver – 75% match │ Gold – 100% match

*The receipts cannot be the same receipts submitted with a member’s general safety grant application, if applicable.
