Hometown Health Conducts Health Screenings for FLC
by Gwen Mahabir

Hometown HealthFor the past nine years, the Florida Municipal Insurance Trust’s Hometown Health wellness program has offered voluntary, no-cost health screenings to municipalities that have group health insurance with the FMIT. These screening events are held annually on-site at participating municipalities throughout the state and provide several benefits to employers and employees.

Participation in these health screening events is not only strongly promoted to our member municipalities but are also promoted and made available free of charge to all eligible employees in the home offices of the Florida League of Cities, which is the administrator of the FMIT. The FLC offers the same incentives to staff as the FMIT does to members who take advantage of the Hometown Health wellness program: a $25 prepaid gift card for completing a Health Assessment and a $100 gift card for additional rewards.

Hometown Health believes in the meaningful experience and positive impacts that on-site health screenings have on participants. Through the “Know Your Numbers” screening event, participants become more knowledgeable about their current well-being by learning important numbers related to their health including blood pressure, body mass index, total cholesterol and blood sugar levels.

Our on-site health screenings are also paired with the option for participants to complete an online health assessment in the dedicated Hometown Health wellness portal powered through WebMD Health Services. The assessment provides questions that help participants further understand how they can improve or maintain their health. Once the assessment is complete, participants are provided with a customized wellness plan along with resources and tools to address health risks identified from the health screening and assessment.

For those who would like more one-on-one assistance with their well-being goals, participants may sign up to work with a dedicated WebMD health coach to help set small achievable goals and provide accountability toward reaching those goals. Our WebMD health coaching team consists of qualified professional coaches with a minimum of a bachelor’s degree. Many have advanced training and hold the titles of stress management specialists, registered nurses, registered dieticians, smoking cessation counselors, exercise physiologists and personal trainers. All coaching sessions are confidential and available free of charge seven days a week.

Participation in our “Know Your Numbers” screening event is not meant to take the place of individuals establishing a relationship with their primary care physician and completing a full annual exam and blood work. These events serve more as a quick check-in for individuals to ensure they not only know their key biometric numbers but also gain a better understanding of how their behaviors and lifestyle can impact these numbers. Employees can track their biometric numbers and results annually to see how they are progressing and what areas of risk may need more attention.

Throughout the process, Hometown Health ensures participants are equipped with supportive tools and resources so that they feel empowered to make and sustain healthy changes in their paths to wellness.
