Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) is a proven approach for enhancing safety by using the built environment to discourage criminal activity and promote positive behavior. This session will introduce the core CPTED principles and demonstrate how local governments can apply them to municipal buildings, parks, trails, parking areas, public spaces, and other community facilities.

Participants will learn how natural surveillance, access control, territorial reinforcement, maintenance, lighting, and landscape design can improve security while creating welcoming public spaces. The session will provide practical examples and assessment strategies that can help reduce crime opportunities, enhance public confidence, and support safer municipal environments for employees, residents, and visitors.
