WEBINAR:
Law Enforcement Safety and the Quadrants of Attention

Description:
Attention is the foundation of officer safety and effective decision-making. Nideffer’s Quadrants of Attention provide a practical framework for understanding where an officer’s focus can—and should—be in dynamic situations. This webinar will explore how lapses in attention lead to critical errors, and how officers can be trained to recognize and manage their focus for improved performance under pressure. The old adage or ‘tunnel vision’ will be challenged as being the hallmark of expert performance.

Through real-world examples—such as missing a critical cue before a rear-end collision, failing to notice a weapon during an emotionally charged encounter, or narrowing attention too much during a role-play scenario—participants will see how overlooked details can have serious consequences. We will also examine how “Contact and Cover” is designed to distribute attention between two officers to improve safety and awareness.

Participants Will Learn To:
• Understand Nideffer’s Quadrants of Attention and their application in policing.
• Recognize how attention shifts under stress and why critical cues are often missed.
• Train officers to manage focus, balance emotional regulation, and avoid tunnel vision.
• Support fellow officers by identifying when their attention is too narrow or misplaced.

This session provides practical tools for officers, trainers, and supervisors to strengthen situational awareness and decision-making, building safer and more effective policing practices.
