FMIT returns $8 million

Showing strength and stability in a time of increased financial uncertainty, the Florida Municipal Insurance Trust (FMIT) announced that it will provide a refund of $8 million to members that held their property coverage with the FMIT in policy year 2009-2010 and renew their coverage for the 2011-2012 policy year.

Many public entities in Florida, including several Florida Municipal Insurance Trust (FMIT) members, have had to cut safety and health departments to meet fiscal goals. This may mean that required safety training is not completed when necessary.

One way to reduce the cost of safety and health training for our members is to provide affordable online training/learning courses that members can access without travel. Many benefits are associated with this option, including reaching a larger number of employees without disrupting services and best utilizing available employee time. MORE>
Do You Know What They Are Doing?

As public entities try to find more ways to generate funds, they are sometimes increasing their exposures to loss without knowing it. During a recent risk control visit to a member, it was observed that a member was leasing space to a private-sector manufacturer. 
The lessee was using flammable materials and supplies in order to build their product. The leased building was not designed for that type of manufacturing, nor did the building have the proper fire protection for that type of operation.
